The Baking Biologist

Established: 9/15

My name is Laura and I am a devoted Christian, an avid animal lover, a retired zookeeper, a once champion equestrian, a former college professor, and someone trained in widllife biology and animal behavior(with the Masters degree to prove it!). But most importantly....I am the mother to one of the greatest puppies (okay she's no longer a puppy but she'll always be that to me) in the whole wide world.

Ashlynn is more than just my inspiration. She is my cheerleader and counselor. My friend and confidant. She makes me smile and heals my tears. She represents what I believe all dogs do, a little piece of Heaven to help us through our time here on Earth. Dogs aren't animals, they are our sons and daughters, brothers and sisters. That is when I decided to start this bakery. Because the dog food out there currently is made the same mechanical and processed way that horse and cattle feed is. Why is it we bake ourselves delicious cookies and simply buy store bought hard as rock sandpaper treats for our furry family?

So I put that Biology degree into good use. How could I give her the type of nutrition that an omnivore like her needed? So many dog foods and dog treats focus on the meat and protein but leave out the necessary fruits and veggies. For instance, how many dogs do you know that eat grass? Well think about how upset your stomach would be if you had no fiber in your diet! But who wants to eat their veggies (I know I don't!)? So I was tasked to combine science and the culinary skill I didn't know I had to make something biologically appropriate (mimicking their natural diet of a wolf......and yes I did take care of both foxes and red wolves as a zookeeper) but also delicious. And while I was at it, why not add some known anticancer, antiaging, heart care, and even coat care ingredients? That is how after a few dozen batches I narrowed down on the perfect recipe.

You will also notice as you browse the petmart (ordering center), that the recipes all have very specific names. That is because, like any responsible pet owner, I take my baby girl to the dog park nearly every day (and twice on the weekend). The rag tag pack of purebreeds and mutts alike have become her extended family and I drew inspiration from this. Each recipe is named after one of her playmates. From lovebug Parker to sweet and feminine Juliana, from ruff and tumble Buddy to the every happy Yogi, each dog has shown me that all dogs have in their hearts the same puprose.                                                        To love and be loved. Just like us.

**I of course can't forget my other two furbabies. Wavern and Vestral are my delightfully fun and playful sugar gliders. And I would never have rescued Ashlynn if my best friend Eclipse had not shown me how to be loved before she passed over to Heaven. Thank you for all of the cuddles and stargazing.**
